The War: The English Civil War can be described merely as a combination of several wars fought between 1642-1651 for some different motivations.
Oliver Cromwell. One reason is the English parliament which fought under its leader Oliver Cromwell against the King Charles I.
At the same time this conflict was a war of the Scots against the King who wanted to restrict the autonomy of the Scottish Presbytherian Church.
At the other hand, there were followers of King Charles religious politics within the Scottish people. These uprised against the Supporters of the traditional "Scots Kirk", whom they called "Covenanters". The Covenant was the association of Scots who did their utmost for religious autonomy.
When 1647 Charles I. decided and promised the Scots to keep their religious tradition untouched, the Scottish army allied with the King. Then, after the execution of Charles I. in 1649, the Scottish acclaimed his son Charles II. as their King as he also promised not to touch the authority of the Scottish Church. Scottish troops fought against the parliamentarian army.
1651 Scottish troops were heavily defeated at Worcester and Charles II. fled into exile in Europe.
In the meantime there had been an uprising in Ireland which had been stopped by Scottish forces, also there had been a rebellion of royal supporters in Wales.
Changing alliances were typical for this conflict.

Flags: Each company of one regiment flew its own flag. Within one regiment, the flags were designed after a common colour scheme. A certain number of smaller symbols like balls or stars etc. on the flag, enabled to identify if the company was the colonel's, the first captain's etc. The flagbearer had his position in front of the pikemen who were the main corps of the regiment, these were flanked by the musketeers. Flagstaves were short and often rested with the butt on the ensign´s hip.
