Napoleonic Wars

Austria and Prussia

Between 1741 and 1816 an Austrian infantry regiment was composed of a different number of companies. Each line infantry regiment had one predominantly white coloured "life" flag and several predominantly yellow "ordinary" or regimental flags. The rule was the same with the cavalry standards.
When new flag patterns were introduced, many of the regiments kept their older patterns instead in case these had not been too damaged. So, during the napoleonic wars, there were still some flags of the Austrian war of succession period flewn.

Prussia

Prussian Infantry

During the reign of Frederik the Great, each company but the grenadiers flew its own flag. A regiment composed of 10 companies (=2 bataillons) was given 10 flags. Up to 1806 the regiments kept their old flags with designs received about 50 years ago. As during the 1806 campaign the Prussian army was nearly completely scattered, also masses of flags were lost.

Reorganized in 1807/1808, the still existing flags which had been saved, where distributed to the newly raised troops. Others got new flags of a more modern pattern.

Prussian Cavalry 1800-1815

The lost 1806 campaign lead to a reorganisation of the Prussian army in 1807/08. During the 1815 campaign the cavalry comprised, besides the guard formations and the militia-cavalry: 4 regiments of cuirassiers, 6 of dragoons, 8 lancers and 12 hussars of the line.

As standards the mounted troops were, as like as the infantry, furnished with older flags of the period before 1806. These were quite different patterns, some of them reaching back to the reign of Fredrik William I. The standards now were totally mixed, some dragoon regiments got old cuirassier flags and vice versa. In some cases the same flags of one older regiment were distributed to several new regiments so that these flew identical flags now. At the end of 1814 some regiments were given quite new flag patterns.

Hussars and Lancers received their standards but after the 1815 campaign, the militia cavalry did not carry standards in 1815.

Lancers and mounted militia 1800-1815.

1808-1815 there were 8 regiments of lancers of the line. In addition, all 1813 raised militia cavalry and the East Prussian National Cavalry were armed with the lance.

1815 raised Lancers Nr. 4-8 were composed of detachments which came from various already existing units, they carried their old uniforms and lance pennons. Some of the squadrons indeed were Hussars without the lance.

The Squadrons Nr. 1-3 of the 6th lancers for example had been the former Lützow-Ulanen with their black uniforms, squadron Nr. 4 were men of the former Hanseatic Legion!

During the 1815-campaign the 4 Prussian army corps together had 17 regiments of lancers and militia-cavalry.
